Trespass Reduction

Detect earlier. Verify faster. Respond with context.

Overview

SIYTE helps operational rail teams detect and verify trespass and suspicious activity across stations, depots and equipment rooms. SIYTE workflow applies a series of checks to every detection to filter out false alerts and engineering work to maintain trust through accuracy.

The challenge

Trespass is one of the biggest causes of delay on Britain's railway: Network Rail figures for 2023/24 attribute 908,168 delay minutes to trespass, from more than 19,300 incidents, roughly one every 30 minutes. Each one impacts train performance, but more importantly puts lives at risk.

Based on the past 7 days of data, here's what I'm seeing for trespass patterns:You've had 11 trespass incidents in the past week, falling into two categories:
Unauthorised Trespass (No PPE) — 7 incidents
  • High priority: people on the track without safety equipment
  • Most recent: today at 15:38
Authorised Track Access (PPE detected) — 4 incidents
  • Medium priority: workers in PPE detected on Track 1
  • Logged for safety compliance
Latest: today at 15:38 (12 minutes ago). Unauthorised trespass on track, high priority: a person on the track without PPE.

Capabilities

Intelligence to action

  1. Integrate with Existing Assets

Apply analytics to existing line-side and station cameras, including smart, legacy, solar and thermal cameras, at stations, crossings and known hotspots.

  2. Add Context

Detect unauthorised access to the track, filter out engineering work and add context, such as direction of movement and body position.

  3. Appropriate Actions

Proportionate actions: workflow can send alerts straight to the control room, initiate announcements, multi-channel alerts or audit events for analysis, dependent on context.

Trespass Reduction: what SIYTE monitors

The solution

Accuracy, Context, Insights and Action

SIYTE provides the most accurate trespass detection available. SIYTE’s workflow will check every detection against multiple models to remove engineering work, misdetections and misplaced detections. In addition, Vision Language Models can provide valuable context to inform the appropriate response.

Where it's deployed

SIYTE is deployed both in stations and trackside. It is working with both fixed cameras and solar-powered temporary cameras.

Ensuring the Appropriate Response

Alerting staff is not always the best response. SIYTE can log events so that Route Crime and BTP teams can assess hotspots and plan mitigative actions. SIYTE can also automate deterrent announcements using IP speakers or through PA systems.
